Philmont Journal

Monday: August 17, 1998

Today we woke up and ate Cliff bars and raisin spice oatmeal. We made our journey without Jamie today and we felt confident about ourselves. Jamie told us that today would be a hard day. We started the trek early, going 3 miles uphill. It was probably the most tiring day of our lives. The trail was literally uphill. Half of the guys lost all of their water because it was pretty hot outside. We stopped for a 20-minute break while Jason West tried to chase the cows. When it came to lunchtime, we ate at the top of Trail Peak and saw the plane crash site. All of the guys took a leak off the wing of the plane at 10,240ft.!! We then hiked another 3 ½ more miles down to our campsite. When we got to camp, we set up our tents and got prepared. That’s when the terrible lightening storm hit. Everyone took cover in their tents waiting for the rain to stop. Lightening was in a 1-mile radius of our camp. Everyone was frightened because the lightening was so loud. Before we went to bed, it stopped raining long enough for us to have a great Chuck Wagon Dinner. It consisted of Beef Stew, Biscuits and Peach Cobbler. After that we went back to camp just before another lightening storm hit. We went to bed at 7:45p.m. that night which was probably the earliest we ever went to sleep! WHAT A NIGHT!
